Two years ago, we partnered with Sanlam Allianz to build the technology infrastructure for modern health insurance in Ghana. We created APIs, claims automation, provider networks, and mobile apps.
The technology worked. But we learned that technology alone isn't enough. Insurance products themselves needed to be reimagined.
Today, we're launching Kora Insurance: a new health insurance brand built on our technology platform, designed specifically for the needs, preferences, and realities of Ghanaian families.
Kora comes from the Akan word meaning "protect." It captures our core mission: protecting the health and financial wellbeing of Ghanaian families. We also chose it because it's short, memorable, and sounds modern: reflecting the fresh approach we're bringing to insurance.
Kora Insurance isn't your parents' insurance company. It's insurance for the smartphone generation, for digital natives, for people who expect services to work seamlessly.
Before building Kora, we spent months talking to Ghanaians about their insurance experiences. The feedback was brutally honest:
Policy documents are written in dense legal language. Coverage exclusions are hidden in fine print. Understanding what you're buying requires a law degree.
The traditional process:
Many people give up halfway through. Insurance that doesn't pay out isn't insurance: it's a scam.
Premiums seem expensive, coverage seems limited, and the hassle of using it makes people question whether it's worth having.
Limited provider networks mean traveling long distances for in-network care or paying extra for convenience.
Try calling most insurance companies. You'll wait on hold, get transferred multiple times, talk to people who can't answer your questions, and eventually give up in frustration.
We built Kora Insurance to fix every single one of these problems.
No more dense policy documents. Kora's coverage is explained in plain language with visual aids.
Plan Comparison Tool: Our app lets you compare plans side-by-side:
Coverage Checker: Wondering if something is covered? Ask our app:
Instant answers. No calling customer service.
Walk into any Kora partner hospital with just your phone. No cash, no forms, no waiting for reimbursement.
How It Works:
The hospital bills Kora directly. We pay them within 48 hours. You never see an invoice.
Current Network:
If you receive care outside our network (traveling, emergency, specialist), claims are simple:
No forms. No mailing receipts. No waiting months.
Claim Status Tracking: Watch your claim progress in real-time:
If denied, you get a clear explanation and appeal options.
Kora offers plans for every budget:
Kora Basic
Kora Plus
Kora Premium
Family Plans
Senior Plans
No more waiting on hold.
In-App Chat: 24/7 AI-powered chatbot handles common questions instantly. Complex issues are escalated to human agents who respond within minutes.
Phone Support: Call our hotline and actually reach a human:average wait time under 60 seconds.
WhatsApp: Prefer WhatsApp? Message us there. We respond.
Email: Send an email, get a response within 4 hours (not 4 days).
Social Media: Tweet or DM us on Twitter/X or Facebook. We monitor and respond.
Kora rewards you for staying healthy:
Free Annual Checkup: Comprehensive health screening every year at no cost.
Wellness Points: Earn points for healthy behaviors:
Redeem Points For:
Goal: Shift from paying for sickness to incentivizing wellness.
Kora brings modern technology to health insurance through our mobile app:
Recommended: Kora Basic or Plus
Young, healthy, but want coverage for emergencies and unexpected illnesses. Kora Basic provides essential protection at a price that fits an early-career budget.
Key Benefits:
Recommended: Kora Plus Family Plan
Parents with children need comprehensive coverage that doesn't break the bank.
Key Benefits:
Recommended: Kora Plus + Maternity Add-On
Pregnancy and childbirth can be expensive. Kora's maternity coverage includes:
Recommended: Kora Senior Plan
Designed for older adults with chronic conditions requiring regular care.
Key Benefits:
Recommended: Kora Premium
Living with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, or other chronic conditions requires ongoing care. Kora Premium removes financial barriers:
Kwame, 34, a software engineer with Kora Basic, experienced severe chest pain one night. He went to the emergency room at Nyaho Medical Centre.
With traditional insurance, he would have paid out-of-pocket (potentially thousands of cedis), then filed a claim, and waited months for reimbursement.
With Kora:
"I was stressed enough about the chest pain," Kwame said. "Kora made sure I wasn't also stressed about money. That's what insurance should do."
Ama enrolled in Kora Plus with maternity coverage when she found out she was pregnant.
Her coverage included:
Total cost without insurance: ~GHS 8,000 Ama's out-of-pocket cost: GHS 0 (paid monthly premiums of GHS 180 during pregnancy)
"Having Kora meant I could focus on my pregnancy, not worry about paying for care," Ama said.
Kofi, 58, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes five years ago. His monthly medication costs were GHS 250+, plus quarterly doctor visits and lab tests.
After enrolling in Kora Senior:
"I'm saving money while getting better care," Kofi said. "My diabetes is under control, I feel great, and insurance actually pays for everything."
Kora partners with companies to offer employee health insurance:
Group Plans:
Employee Benefits:
Employer Benefits:
Current Partners: We're working with tech companies, banks, NGOs, and other organizations to provide employee coverage.
Kora Insurance isn't standalone: it's part of a comprehensive health ecosystem:
All Kora Premium members get free home healthcare visits through Nugli Health:
Pregnant women with maternity coverage automatically get free Obaatanpa Care remote pregnancy monitoring:reducing complications and improving outcomes.
A portion of Kora premiums funds Summer Health Foundation programs providing free care to underserved communities:your insurance helps others too.
Direct integrations with 120+ partner hospitals ensure seamless, cashless care.
We believe in pricing transparency. Here's how Kora premiums are calculated:
What You Pay For:
What You Don't Pay For:
Result: Better coverage at lower prices than traditional insurance.
How to Join:
No medical exams. No lengthy forms. No waiting periods for most conditions.
Pre-Existing Conditions: We cover pre-existing conditions after a 6-month waiting period (industry standard). But unlike many insurers, we don't permanently exclude them.
Kora Insurance is launching with ambitious goals:
2025 Targets:
2026 Vision:
Kora Insurance makes these promises:
We Will Always:
We Will Never:
These aren't just words: they're commitments we're accountable to.
Health insurance doesn't have to be frustrating, expensive, or unreliable. Kora proves it can be simple, affordable, and effective.
We're building insurance for a new generation of Ghanaians:people who expect technology to work for them, who value transparency, who deserve better.
Download the Kora app today and experience health insurance that actually works.
Because healthcare is a right, not a privilege. And insurance should make it more accessible, not less.
Welcome to Kora. Welcome to insurance done right.
Kora Insurance is powered by Summer Health's technology platform in partnership with SanlamAllianz. Download the Kora app today or visit Summer Health to learn more.
