Saving Mothers and Babies Through Technology

Every day in Ghana, approximately two women die from pregnancy or childbirth complications. Most of these deaths are preventable if complications are detected early enough for intervention.

Today, we're excited to announce Obaatanpa Care (meaning "good mother" in Akan), a platform that enables continuous pregnancy monitoring between clinic visits, helping detect problems early when they can still be treated.

How Obaatanpa Care Works

Obaatanpa Care connects pregnant women with their healthcare providers through simple daily check-ins.

For Women with Smartphones

A mobile app guides them through daily health questions about symptoms, blood pressure, fetal movement, and overall wellbeing.

For Women with Feature Phones

USSD technology (similar to mobile money) allows women to answer health questions using basic menu options. No internet or smartphone required.

The system analyzes responses and alerts healthcare providers when concerning patterns emerge, allowing early intervention before complications become serious.

Why USSD Technology Matters

While Ghana has high mobile phone penetration, many women, especially in rural areas, use basic feature phones. USSD ensures Obaatanpa Care reaches the last mile, making maternal healthcare accessible regardless of phone type or internet connectivity.

Women simply dial a short code and follow simple menu prompts to complete their daily health check-in.

Current Pilot Program

Obaatanpa Care is currently in pilot phase, launched in October 2024 at Motherlove Care Hospital in Kasoa. We've enrolled approximately 10,000 pregnant women so far.

Early results are encouraging. Healthcare providers report that continuous monitoring helps them catch issues before they become emergencies, and pregnant women appreciate the daily support and peace of mind.

Planned Nationwide Expansion

Following successful pilot results, we're planning nationwide expansion in 2026.

2026 Expansion Goals

We're working with teaching hospitals, private hospitals, community clinics, and NGOs to make Obaatanpa Care available to every pregnant woman in Ghana.

Free for All Mothers

Obaatanpa Care is free for pregnant women, funded through partnerships with insurance providers, corporate wellness programs, and development partners.

Our goal is universal coverage, ensuring every Ghanaian mother has access to continuous pregnancy monitoring and early detection of complications.
