Introducing Obaatanpa Care: Remote Pregnancy Monitoring for Every Ghanaian Mother

Saving Mothers and Babies Through Technology

Every day in Ghana, approximately two women die from pregnancy or childbirth complications. Most of these deaths are preventable if complications are detected early enough for timely intervention.

Today, we are proud to introduce Obaatanpa Care (meaning "good mother" in Akan), a digital maternal health platform designed to enable continuous pregnancy monitoring between clinic visits and support earlier detection of potential complications.

How Obaatanpa Care Works

Obaatanpa Care connects pregnant women with their healthcare providers through simple daily health check-ins.

For Women with Smartphones

A mobile application guides women through short daily health questions about:

  • Symptoms and wellbeing
  • Blood pressure readings
  • Fetal movement
  • General pregnancy progress

For Women with Feature Phones

USSD technology (similar to mobile money services) allows women to answer health questions using simple menu options. No smartphone or internet is required.

Women simply dial a short code and follow on-screen prompts to complete their daily check-in.

The system analyzes responses and notifies healthcare providers when concerning patterns emerge. This allows early follow-up before complications become serious.

Why USSD Technology Matters

While Ghana has high mobile phone penetration, many women, particularly in rural and underserved communities, use basic feature phones.

USSD ensures Obaatanpa Care reaches the last mile and makes maternal healthcare accessible regardless of phone type, data access, or internet connectivity.

Current Pilot Program

Obaatanpa Care is currently in early pilot phase, being tested at selected partner facilities beginning in 2025.

Our goal is to validate the platform's clinical effectiveness, user experience, and operational feasibility before broader deployment. If pilot results are positive, we aim to scale enrollment significantly over the coming years.

Initial feedback from pilot participants and healthcare providers will inform platform refinement and expansion planning.

Planned Nationwide Expansion

Subject to successful pilot outcomes, we envision expanding Obaatanpa Care across Ghana in the coming years.

2026-2027 Expansion Aspirations

Our expansion goals, contingent on pilot success and funding availability, include:

  • Expanding to additional partner facilities across Greater Accra
  • Growing enrollment as clinical validation demonstrates value
  • Exploring opportunities in multiple regions across Ghana
  • Seeking partnerships with Ghana Health Service and maternal health programs

We are actively engaging teaching hospitals, private hospitals, community clinics, and NGOs to explore pathways toward making Obaatanpa Care more widely accessible.

Free for All Mothers

Our goal is to provide Obaatanpa Care at no cost to pregnant women. We are pursuing funding through partnerships with insurance providers, corporate wellness programs, and development partners.

Our long-term aspiration is universal access, working toward a future where every Ghanaian mother can benefit from continuous pregnancy monitoring and earlier detection of potential complications.
